We get asked a version of this question every week: should we still do SEO, or is it all about getting cited by AI now? It is the wrong framing. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and classic search engine optimization (SEO) draw on most of the same foundations. The interesting question is not which one to do. It is which one earns your next hour, given where your business is today.

What they share, and where they split

Both reward a fast, well-structured site with clear content and real authority. They split on intent. SEO optimizes to win a click from a results page. AEO optimizes to be the source an assistant quotes when there may be no results page at all. The same article can serve both, but the way you structure it, and the questions you target, shift depending on which outcome you care about most.

A simple way to decide

When a client asks where to spend, we look at two things: how their customers search, and how mature their site already is. That usually points clearly to one side for the next quarter.

AEO is not the replacement for SEO. It is what SEO looks like once the answer, not the link, is the thing being won.

The honest tradeoff

AEO results are harder to measure than rankings. You will not always see a tidy position number move. What you will see, if you are watching, is your business getting named in assistant answers, an uptick in branded searches, and better-qualified leads who arrive already half-convinced. We track those leading indicators deliberately, because the businesses that wait for a perfect dashboard before investing in AEO are the ones who show up late.

Spend the next hour where your customers already are. For a growing number of businesses, that is inside an AI assistant, asking a question your competitor's website cannot yet answer.
