For a decade, local marketing had one obvious center of gravity: the Google Business Profile. Fill it out, collect reviews, keep your hours accurate, and you showed up in the map pack. We still set up every client's profile exactly that way. But in 2026, a growing share of best-dentist-near-me questions never reach the map pack at all. They get answered by an AI assistant first.

What actually changed

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview for a recommendation, the model assembles an answer from across the open web before the user ever sees a list of links. If your business is invisible to those models, you are invisible at the exact moment the decision gets made. A flawless Business Profile does not rescue you here, because the assistant is not reading your profile. It is reading the rest of the web and deciding who to name.

The signals AI assistants actually use

Across the local sites we audited this year, the businesses that get named by AI tools share a recognizable set of traits. None of them are exotic, and most are things a Business Profile alone will never give you.

The map pack rewards a complete profile. AI assistants reward a business the rest of the web agrees exists and is genuinely good at one specific thing.

What to do this quarter

Start by making your website say, in clear text, exactly what a customer would ask an assistant. If you run a clinic, that means a page answering do-they-take-walk-ins, what-insurance-do-they-accept, and where-do-they-park, phrased the way a person actually speaks. Then add the schema markup that lets a model parse those answers without guessing. We typically see citation pickup within 30 to 60 days of shipping that combination, well before any movement in classic rankings.

Keep the Business Profile pristine. It is still table stakes for the map. Just stop treating it as the finish line. The businesses that win the next decade of local search are the ones building an answer the whole web can quote, not only a listing Google can display.
