SMS is only one of the five messaging problems most businesses have. A text thread, an Instagram DM, a Facebook Messenger conversation, a WhatsApp chat and a Google Business message are five separate inboxes, five separate tones, five sets of rules, and usually five different people answering them inconsistently.
Unifying them took seven modules and thirty-one lessons to write down properly. This article is the map: the one thing that kills most SMS programmes before they send anything, the frameworks the unified system is built on, and three things you can do this week that cost nothing.
Consent is decided before your first send
SMS is the only channel here where getting it wrong is worse than ineffective. Carriers filter, numbers get flagged, and in the United States the TCPA and CTIA rules mean a sloppy consent record is a liability rather than a missed opportunity. Chile and the wider LATAM market run on a different rulebook again, which matters the moment a single list contains both.
The practical consequence is unintuitive: the highest-leverage work in an SMS programme happens before a single message is written. Teams that treat consent as a compliance checkbox at launch end up rebuilding the list. Teams that design the consent record first never have to. None of this is legal advice; confirm your obligations with counsel for the jurisdictions you actually send into.
The frameworks the unified system runs on
The course names its frameworks so a team can carry them around. These are the load-bearing ones, which show what each is for without the build instructions.
Framework The Consent Stack & the 3-Touch Consent Loop
How permission is captured, confirmed and re-confirmed so that what you hold is a record and not an assumption. The Consent Paper Trail is the audit-side companion: what you must be able to produce and for how long.
Framework The Dual-Jurisdiction Checklist
What changes when one list spans US and Chile/LATAM numbers. This is the framework people discover they needed after they have already merged two lists.
Framework The Keyword Taxonomy & Trigger-Response Matrix
Four tiers of keyword, and the matrix that decides what each one fires, on which channel, inside which time window. The Keyword Compliance Triangle sits on top and governs the reserved words you do not get to reassign.
Framework The 14-Day Velocity Ladder & the Cadence Ceiling
How fast a new number may scale, and the frequency past which a list stops converting and starts unsubscribing. Two numbers that decide whether a programme survives its first month.
Framework The Channel-Agnostic Contact Graph
The piece that makes the other six modules add up to one inbox: the same human, recognised across SMS, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Google Business, with one conversation history instead of five.
Three things you can do this week
1: Write down what your consent record actually contains
For any contact you would text tomorrow, can you produce who consented, when, to what exact wording, and through which channel? If any of those four is missing, you do not have a consent record, you have a phone number. Finding that out now is free; finding it out during a carrier review is not.
2: Reserve the compliance keywords before the campaign keywords
STOP, HELP and their equivalents in every language you send in are spoken for. Map those first and confirm each returns the right response, then design your campaign keywords around what is left. Doing it in the other order is how a promo keyword ends up shadowing an opt-out.
3: Answer every channel in one place, even if that place is a spreadsheet.
Before you buy any unified-inbox software, run the manual version for a fortnight: one log, every channel, one person owning response time. You will learn which channel actually carries your revenue, and that answer decides what you automate first. It is frequently not the one people expect.
Where the rest of it lives
Deliberately not in this article: the four-tier keyword taxonomy itself, the drip and win-back sequences, the two-way conversation state machine, the Instagram DM funnel, the Messenger experience ladder, the Google Business local-intent capture, and the message templates written out ready to adapt. That is the course: seven modules, thirty-one lessons, five platforms, bilingual EN and ES.
